Windows Server 2008 R2 won’t start after update installation
You may run into situation when windows updates are installed and when the server restarts it freezes before startup with black screen and only mouse cursor available. Sometimes it may keep restarting. I run into this situation and I was not being able to start the server neither using safe mode, safe mode with networking, neither Last Known Good Configuration.
Here are the steps that I used to solve this issue:
- Use Windows Server 2008 R2 installation DVD and booted the server from the DVD
- When you arrive at the windows with the button Install Now, choose Repair your computer so that you go to the recovery console
- On the recovery console, check the drive letter where the OS is installed. In my case, it was messed, as we’ve normally seen Windows in C: drive, but after I run dir on C: drive, the OS files were not there, so I went to D: drive and found the OS files. Then, I run the following command:
DISM /image:D:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
where D: is the drive with the operating system files in my case. In your case, it may be C: drive.
Hope it solves your problem.
